The Lighthouse Witches by C. J. Cooke
The Lighthouse Witches by C. J. Cooke takes you on a layered gothic journey that blurs the past and present.
The novel unfolds through multiple narrators as well as timelines. It is one of those stories that leaves you asking yourself what the heck is going on from the very start.
I love a witchy story, and this one did not disappoint. You have all the fine elements of unfair witch trials, rumors of lingering curses, and wildlings that seem to hunt the island’s inhabitants, stealing away their children without remorse. There are mysterious characters, real-life struggles, and the return of children thought long dead.
I personally enjoyed the storyline of Liv, a single mother and artist who was hired to paint a mural in the infamous island lighthouse. The tension between her and her oldest daughter is so real and acrid you can feel it through the pages. You learn the terrifying history of the lighthouse and the caves it sits upon through both Liv and her daughters’ experiences on the island. The rich stories of the past had me turning pages and staying up far later than reasonable.
If you are in the mood for a twisty, atmospheric read, this is a great choice. I am looking forward to reading more from this author. I am torn on which to try first… The Nesting or I Know My Name.
Hope you enjoy it.
Love that my cat left a little something on the chair…. oh Chesterfield.
